Festival FAQ

An event as large as DIFF can be confusing. Here are answers to frequently asked questions about the Festival.

What is a Rush Line?
The Festival reserves a certain amount of seats for pass holders at each screening. If those seats aren’t taken before the film starts, we make them available to people standing in Rush Lines outside the theater. People in the Rush Lines must exchange vouchers or use cash to buy a ticket to the screening. Look for Rush Line signs at each venue.

What is a regular screening?
A regular screening is any film screening that is not identified as Opening Night, a Centerpiece Screening or a Gala Screening (see next question).

What is a Centerpiece or Gala Screening?
These films include Opening Night and other special screenings that include well-known talent and include a party or other special events after the film. Ticket prices are higher for these events.

What is DFS Honors?
The Dallas Film Society Honors is the Festival’s awards dinner. During this special presentation, we honor Star Award recipients and winners of the Festival’s Grand Jury Prizes and Audience Awards. A limited number of DFS Honors tickets are available online and at the Prekindle Main Box Office before the event.

How do I get tickets?
Tickets are available at the Prekindle Main Box Office in Mockingbird Station, via the Online DIFF Box Office or at the DIFF box offices in individual theaters on the day of the screening.

What’s the difference between a voucher, a ticket and a pass?

How do I use a voucher?
A voucher is an option for festivalgoers who like to attend the Festival all day and catch as many open screenings as they can. It’s also a solution for festivalgoers who don’t know what films they want to see or which days they want to see them. (Vouchers are no longer on sale.)

Vouchers don’t guarantee a seat, but they do allow many festivalgoers to see a lot of movies at a reduced price. If there are unsold seats for a regular screening, festivalgoers can exchange a voucher for a ticket at the Prekindle Main Box Office, at the Prekindle Box Offices in theaters on the day of your screening, or in Rush Lines.

A voucher is a risk, but if the movie you want to see is full, you can use it for admission to any other regular screening.

I have a PASS, why can’t I get into screenings/why do I have to wait in the Rush Line?

Passholders are required to claim their seats 15 minutes before each screening time. After that time, we first release all unclaimed seats to ticketholders, then to people in the Rush Line. Any passholder who arrives at the theater late will have to stand in the Rush Line for a chance at a seat.

I have a TICKET, why can’t I get into screenings?

Passholders have priority seating for all screenings. We open the theaters to ticketholders after passholders are seated. Note that a ticket does not guarantee a seat, but it is rare that ticketholders aren’t able to attend a screening. If this happens, please alert a Festival staff member and they will work to resolve the issue.

This is my first Festival — what’s the best way to get involved or become a volunteer?

We need LOTS of volunteers. Please visit our volunteer page to sign up and view open volunteer opportunities.
